The Devastating Effect of COVID-19 on the Mental Health of the Youths
It is without doubt a thing of nobility to take into consideration, the devastating effect COVID-19 has had on the mental health of our youths. Why because when we talk about health generally, the mental aspect of it is often overlooked. But then when you take a look at the definition of health, as defined by the World Health Organization, "a state of complete mental, social and physical wellbeing and not merely the absence of disease". So for instance, if you are free from malaria, pneumonia, or an accident but you have a mental illnesse such as schizophrenia, Alzheimer, Depression, Border line Personality disorder or Dementia, then automatically you are classified as being sick.
But again, just so you get a clear picture of what am trying to say, I want us to understand that mental illness is not only restricted to retarded people walking on the street with tattered clothes and unkempt hair, why because, if you were to carry out a psychotherapy in your locality, you might be amazed to find most of its occupants having one mental disorder or the other.
So now, considering our topic, which says: the devastating effect of COVID-19 on the mental health of youths, first off, I want to say, that the condition of Nigeria even before the novel COVID-19 hit us, is enough to make anyone depressed. But off course, the lockdown of schools due to the pandemic has had its own deteriorating effect on the mental health of youth, and that has majored very much in depression. Why because we the youth, including I myself have been re-orientated to a whole new way of life, contrary to what we were accustomed to, so therefore, it’s like ripping apart two elements that have been glued together.
Now the question that begs is this: how do we deal with this menace?
To the parents, I would say, please keep a close eye on your youth, and again try to mellow down on the tough doggedness characteristic of African parents, but again, am not saying you shouldn’t discipline your child, besides, the scripture says spare the rod and spoil the child, but again the same scripture in Colossians 3 verse 21 say fathers do not provoke your children, so they will not be discouraged.
And, to the youth, I would say, take charge of your life, try and engage in exercises, maintain a healthy diet and lifestyle, set out routines for your day, read books written by great men and don’t forget to pray and study the Bible because it is the most essential book on the surface of the earth, and lastly engage in a social group, why because, it’s going to help alleviate your mood. And at the end of it all, you will be rewarded with a significant spiritual, physical and mental growth and then automatically that is going to reflect positively on your mental health.
